Manchester United are sixth in the Premier League and six points behind Tottenham, the last team with a place in Europe next season. Things might have been different if De Jong and Harry Kane had ended up at Old Trafford last summer.
Erik ten Hag still regrets that he missed out on signing the Barcelona midfielder. "In this period, we couldn’t always get the players we wanted. But then you have to build and you have to accept that you get talent in instead of players who already proved it in the past" he told 'Sky Sports'.
"It would’ve been De Jong and Casemiro playing and complementing each other." The coach believes that the midfield would have been better had he been able to count on the 'Cule' and his vast experience.
Similarly, he admitted that United tried to land Kane, also without luck: "We have had some choices made with talents like Rasmus Hojlund. I can see a striker (Kane) who already proved it, who we want to sign and we couldn’t get him. And then we went to Rasmus because he’s a talent. You know Harry Kane will get you 30 goals. I think Rasmus will get there, but he needs time.
