Netherlands player Cody Gakpo explained that he celebrated the goal with the physiotherapist because he told him he was "going to score" in the Euro 2024 round of 16 clash against Romania. He also felt that his side played "a good game" with "unbelievable" support from the fans.
"It was a good game from our side. We tried to dominate the match and we did it very well. We knew they were a tough opponent. But we were very prepared. We showed it. The fans were also incredible in the stadium. We needed to score goals and we did that too. Good performance in general," he explained at the press conference.
On a personal level, the striker scored his third goal in this European Championship: "I always try to be focused on giving my best for the national team and for the country. The whole team helps me in my game. That's what we all do. I'm glad I can be useful for my team."
Gakpo was voted 'MVP' of the match, in which he scored a goal and provided an assist. He also scored three goals in the tournament and is at the top of the scoring charts along with Jamal Musiala (Germany), Ivan Schranz (Slovakia) and Georges Mikautadze (Georgia). Of these, only the Bayern Munich player is still in the competition.
