The European Super League, a new closed Champions League format proposed by Juventus, Barcelona and Real Madrid for 2021, has not yet seen the light of day.
UEFA, FIFA and a number of European giants, including PSG and Bayern Munich, have always been opposed to the creation of this new closed league, which would include the 20 best European clubs.
But more than two years after the announcement of this project, Real Madrid, via their president Florentino Perez, continue to promote it.
The chief of Europe's most successful club once again promoted the European Super League in his speech to the Ordinary General Meeting of Socios Representatives on Saturday morning:
"The Super League is necessary, the new Champions League format with more matches is absurd. We want an open competition, based on meritocracy, opening up matches to broadcasters free of charge so that there is more interest, using new technologies to develop football. Most clubs are losing money and we have to react.
"It doesn't make sense. In Spain, people earn €1,000 a month and have to pay more than €100 to watch football on television. This strategy can't involve asking people for more money and the few people who stay in front of their television sets."
"European football does not belong to the UEFA president. The Super League is more necessary than ever. The aim is to offer better football, and it is the clubs that must control their destiny," concluded the Real Madrid president.
