Spain coach Luis de la Fuente said on Monday that “being a footballer is a risky activity, injuries are the drama of a footballer and the drama of a coach, especially a national team manager, when you call a player and he gets injured in a national team”.
Questioned about the heavy load of matches faced by professional footballers, De la Fuente explained to Carlos Herrera on 'Cadena COPE', that “there are a lot of matches, but when the schedules are drawn up nobody has any problems, everything seems very good, the schedules start, we are going to play so many matches, before in July, in August, in June we know the matches that will be played the following season”.
In any case, explained De la Fuente, “the minutes a player has at the end of the year, the ones he plays with the national team represent 3%”.
De la Fuente highlighted the quality and commitment of his internationals and when asked if this current team can be World Cup champions, he indicated that Spain has options “because there is a team to compete with everything”.
“We have won something important, but the most important thing is how it has been achieved. With group cohesion. Without a single problem. That's what makes me feel most proud; with fantastic football and winning every game. Something that had never been achieved before,” he added.
