England could be close to appointing a new manager for the future. Sky Sports on Tuesday dismissed British media rumours that Pep Guardiola was one of the main contenders to succeed Southgate and confirmed that the Football Association (FA) only have eyes on Thomas Tuchel at the moment.
The German arrived at Bayern Munich at the end of the 2022/23 season and miraculously won the Bundesliga title. However, his progress was not as good in the 2023/24 campaign which closed without silverware, albeit with the Bavarian side qualifying for the Champions League semi-finals.
Tuchel's agents are reportedly in contact with the FA to close the German's arrival in the next few hours. Moreover, these talks have intensified precisely in the current international break, after the disappointing performance of Lee Carsley's England against Greece in the Nations League.
Tuchel is currently ahead of the other contenders, Graham Potter and Eddie Howe. Neither Jurgen Klopp, who recently joined Red Bull in a managerial role, nor Pep Guardiola, who was initially approached without progress, are currently on the shortlist of contenders to lead the Three Lions.
The FA would not have to pay Bayern Munich anything, even if the coach has not yet been fully released from his obligations to the Bavarian outfit. If he becomes the new England manager, Tuchel will be only the third foreigner to do so after the recently departed Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.
