International duty calls for Sandro Tonali, but that is in no way a reason to halt celebrations after Sunday's Carabao Cup triumph with Newcastle United. The Magpies rose above Liverpool, beating them 2-1 to lift the trophy at Wembley and end their 70-year hunt for domestic silverware.
"We will forever be Newcastle heroes," the 24-year-olf midfielder said from the Italy camp after flying to Coverciano ahead of the upcoming international break. "Winning the Carabao Cup was an incredible feeling, I don't have words to describe it," he admitted.
Tonali joined the Geordies in July 2023 from AC Milan for a record-breaking 64 million euro fee, becoming the most expensive Italian player of all time. The former Brescia player revealed that he was advised not to join the club as it would ruin his chance of piling up his trophy cabinet.
"When I signed for Newcaslte, everyone told me that it would be extremely hard to in trophies here," he said. Tonali will be in action this week with the 'Azzurri', who face their double header against Germany in the Nations League quarter-finals.
