The intensity of the Premier League favors the young.

But a few players have defied the odds, proving time and time again that age is just a number. Of course, everything depends on many factors, such as the payer’s lifestyle, position on the pitch, and influence on the team. These were the top 5 oldest Premier League players in the 2022/23 season;

1. Willy Caballero-Southampton (41 Years)

Willy Caballero started his football career with Boca Juniors in 2001 before moving to Elche in 2004. The Argentine’s taste of English football came in 2014 when he signed a 3-year deal with Manuel Pellegrini’s Manchester City as the backup goalkeeper to Joe Hart, a role he maintained when Claudio Bravo signed for the Cityzens in 2015.
Caballero moved to Chelsea at the start of the 2017/18 season, where he’s best remembered for the infamous Kepa Arrizabalaga incident in the League Cup final against Manchester City.

In December 2021, the Argentine signed a 1-month contract with Southampton following injuries to The Saints’ main goalkeepers. At 41 years, Willy Caballero officially became the oldest player in the Premier League in the 2022/23 season.

2. Andy Lonergan-Everton (39 Years)

Some will argue that goalkeepers have longer careers because their role isn’t as demanding as outfield players. At the very best, older goalkeepers are only limited to cup appearances or backup roles in case the main shot-stopper gets injured.

One man that understands that too well is Andy Lonergan, the little-known third-choice Everton goalkeeper who joined the club in 2021. The English keeper was part of the Toffees side that dangled with relegation throughout the 2022/23 season as the second-choice short-stopper behind Jordan Pickford. Andy was the second oldest player in the Premier League in the 2022/23 season at 39 years.

3. Thiago Silva-Chelsea (38 Years)

Is he ever going to stop? That’s many people’s thoughts every time they watch ‘O Montsro’ in action for the Blues. Former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel once described the Brazilian as “the Benjamin Button of football” for his longevity in the beautiful game. Thiago has shared the dressing room with legends such as Paolo Maldini, Ronaldinho, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic throughout an incredible career that began in 1998 with Fluminense.
Chelsea might have had one of their worst campaigns in 2022, but Thiago Silva was one of the shining lights throughout the disastrous season. The
Brazilian started the season on a high before Thomas Tuchel’s shock dismissal in 2022 almost threatened his place in the starting lineup, with new manager Graham Potter favoring a more youthful defensive pairing of Benoit Badiashile and Wesley Fofana.

But the Brazilian international quickly regained his place in the starting lineup, recording impressive performances even when Chelsea struggled against naturally weaker opposition. At 38 years old, Silva became the third oldest player in the Premier League.

4. Lukasz Fabianski-West Ham United (38 Years)

Lukasz Fabianski started his career in his native Poland with Legia Warsaw before moving to Arsenal in 2007. He signed for Swansea and later West Ham United, where he’s quickly established himself as the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper. The Polish shot-stopper was instrumental in the Hammers’ recent European success, playing a big part in the club’s run-up to the UEFA Conference League final.
While West Ham didn’t have the best campaign in 2023, Fabianski still earned David Moyes’ faith in the starting lineup, recording a series of impressive performances that helped ensure their safety in the top flight for the upcoming season.

The 2022-23 campaign was Fabianski’s 5th consecutive season with the Hammers and his 16th overall in English football, joining the list of the oldest premier league players.

5. Ashley Young-Aston Villa (38 Years)

Talk about longevity, and Ashley Young quickly springs to mind. He’s been there, done it, left, and come back. Young has been around since 2003 when he debuted for Watford as a promising 21-year-old winger. He moved to Aston Villa in 2007 before landing at Manchester United 5 years later in a £17 million deal.

After a successful spell with Manchester United that ended with a Premier League title, the FA Cup, and the Europa League trophies, Young moved to Inter Milan in 2020, winning the Italian Serie A in the 2020/21 season. He returned to Aston Villa in June 2021, signing a one-year contract to kick-start his second spell with the club.

After a mixed start to the 2022/23 campaign that saw him in and out of Aston Villa’s lineup, Young found a fresh start under Unai Emery, becoming an integral part of a Villa side that qualified for European football that season.

It looks like Young’s story in the Premier League isn’t over yet after he recently signed a one-year contract with Everton for the 2023/24 season. The ex-Manchester United man will be 39 years old on his next birthday.
