Aston Villa have been fined €60,000 by UEFA for the alleged failure to meet the submision deadline of their financial information for the 2023/2024 season.
As the 2023/2024 summer transfer window has come to an end, UEFA’s Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) have met earlier this week to evaluate clubs in respect to the squad cost rule (SCR) for the first time. The newly-introduced rule mandates that a club's total spending on transfers, wages and agent fees cannot trascend a certain percentage of its income. Whilst the percentage for the 2023-24 season was 90%, the figure for the 2024-25 campaign will be reduced to 80%, and then 70% from 2025 onwards.
Although the 90% mark was not breached by Aston Villa, a late submission resulted in the breach of article 95 of UEFA's club licensing and financial sustainability regulations, thus leading to the fine.
According to Aston Villa director Damian Vdiagany, adhering to both Premier League's profit and sustainability rules (PSR) and UEFA squad cost rule (SCR) puts clubs in an awkward situation. "They (SCR and PSR) are two different parcels in two different hands. SCR forces you to sell expensive players. For instance, to decrease our ratio of cost, we had a great deal that was (Moussa) Diaby to Al Ittihad. Even though he cost a lot, the fact we sold him for big money means we don’t have a big profit. So we have to sell expensive players," he explains.
“But if you want to stick to PSR, you have to sell cheaper players and academy players. It’s almost impossible to match both. The EPL is not aligned with UEFA rules.“
