After an extraordinary season that was rewarded with qualification for the Champions League - the first in its history - Girona, which had many doubts about its participation in the competition due to the rules of multiple ownership, will finally play in it with a series of changes requested by UEFA.
'Que t'hi jugues', a programme on ‘SER’, has reported that the Catalan team has received the approval of the European football governing body, which has learned first-hand about the changes that will take place in the structure of the Girona team for next season.
The source mentioned above indicates that the intention of the City Group, which holds 47% of the shares of the Spanish club, is to reduce that percentage within the entity. And this has to be approved at the Extraordinary General Shareholders' Meeting to be held on 1 July, which will also confirm the departure of the three Manchester City directors.
UEFA wants Girona to operate independently from the Citizen side. Both clubs will not be allowed to transfer players to each other and will not be allowed to loan players until September 2025. UEFA is expected to give its final verdict on Monday, as that is the deadline set for Girona to comply with the rules against multiple ownership.
‘The Times’ was another media outlet to point out that UEFA has given Manchester City the go-ahead to compete next season in the same European competitions as its sister club Girona. Manchester United have also been given the nod, as Nice, who qualified for the Europa League, are owned by Sir Jim Ratcliffe's ‘Ineos’ company.
