The Spanish Footballers' Association (AFE) assured that it is in contact with the staffs of Valencia and Real Madrid to definitively define their position on La Liga match between the two, postponed by the floods in Spain and set for January 2nd, a date on which matches cannot be played according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

After learning that Valencia-Real Madrid has been set for January 2nd, 2025, the AFE indicated that this date has not yet been approved by them. The union must give the go-ahead as it is a day on which it cannot be played by the Collective Agreement in force, after the single judge of professional competitions of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) set the referred day at 8 p.m. as the date for its celebration.
The agreement, in force until June 30, 2026, establishes in its article 11 the holiday days and special permissions and states that in the current season, 2024-2025, “no matches of any kind of official competition will be scheduled between December 23rd, 2024 to January 2nd, 2025”.
“Likewise, neither will matches of any other kind be held or played, nor will any of the activities referred to in Article 8 of this agreement be scheduled on December 24th, 25th and 31st and January 1st of the years in which this agreement is in force,” adds the document published by the BOE in December 2023.
The resolution of the RFEF judge indicates that Valencia proposed the date of December 2nd to hold the match and Real Madrid the date of Sunday 5th, both considered reasonable by La Liga, although the latter preferred the former.
The judge has opted for the 2nd because the knockout round of the Copa del Rey, in which the two teams will participate, is scheduled to be played between January 5th and 7th, and because deciding the date of the 5th would imply modifying the dates of the Copa matches.
This, it adds in its resolution, “with the eventual additional damage to its competitors, in whose field the playoffs would be held, eventually considering that the Epiphany holidays are the most suitable for a greater influx of spectators.”
“If the match were held on the 5th, it would coincide with the celebration of the Three Wise men parade, an event of great relevance, whose organization could significantly affect the environment of the Mestalla stadium, with traffic cuts and security deployments that could interfere with the normal development of the match and its security, or vice versa, the celebration of the football match, to the detriment of safety in the environment of the parade,” he argues.
The judge adds that Valencia has provided a letter from the Local Police Headquarters in which it states that, if the match were to be held on the 5th, it would mean a "damage difficult to make compatible with the Three Wise Men parade and other Christmas events that involve the attention of large police resources', so playing it on the 2nd 'would minimize security risks and facilitate accessibility to the sports venue'.
If it is definitively approved on the 2nd, after the Christmas break Real Madrid will have to play on that day the postponed match against Valencia, the round of 32 of the Copa del Rey, still without date or rival until the draw is held next Monday; and on Thursday 9th, the semifinal of the Spanish Super Cup against Mallorca in the city of Jeddah.
