Israel winger Liel Abada moved from Celtic to Major League Soccer club Charlotte after coming under pressure from compatriots to quit the Scottish Premiership following displays of support for the Palestinian people among some fans.
The 22-year-old, who made 112 appearances for Celtic, scoring 29 goals, signed a deal until 2026 with the MLS side for a reported fee of £8 million ($10.25 million).
"It’s desperately sad, the whole situation. A fantastic young player, came in as a 19-year-old, and lit up the field with so many fantastic goals, and had a really successful period," Celtic coach Brendan Rodgers told reporters.
"Whatever doubts he had in the summer, he was happy to commit and sign a new deal, and through no fault of his own or the club’s, he’s had to leave to take his career elsewhere," he continued.
Rodgers went on to add: "I spoke to Liel on Monday, we had him round the house. Desperately sad because I was looking forward to working with him. He’s created some wonderful memories here and we wish him all the very best in America."
