Spain made their Euro debut with a convincing 3-0 win over Croatia that has the fans dreaming of a happy ending to the tournament. Although this has only just begun, Alvaro Morata is clear that 'La Roja' can be contenders for the title, but for that to happen they have to believe it.
"People have to put clubs aside. Before the debut, I got the whole team together: staff, physios, players.... We hugged each other and I said that we'd been through a lot of battles to get to the European Championship and that we were starting a competition that we could win perfectly well. We have to remember that every time we put on the shirt," he said in an interview with 'Marca'.
The Atletico Madrid striker explained why he is confident in Spain's level: "If you don't think about it, it's much more difficult for it to happen. We've been working for this for a long time here. We've won the Nations League, which in time will take value, but it's not a Euro or a World Cup. It still hurts that we didn't play in the final against England last time. There are incredible teams, but I think it's very difficult to find one like the one we've put together. We can do it, but you always need a bit of luck and to overcome a critical moment.
As for the clash with Italy, he said that before the draw he had expected to be drawn in the same group as Spain: "I knew we were going to be drawn... I've come up against them in every game. I've come up against them at every European Championship and they've knocked me out both times, unfortunately. We have to treat it as a crossover. The competitive spirit of the 'Azzurri' is very strong.
As for his future, he put it aside until the end of this tournament. "It doesn't worry me, less than any season in my life, perhaps because I'm so focused on this European Championship, so excited and so motivated, that I don't even talk about it", he concluded.
