Barcelona coach Hansi Flick said on Sunday, after the 1-5 win over Villarreal at La Ceramica, that his players played “an incredible game” but are “sad” about Marc-Andre Ter Stegen's injury.
Flick said in the press room that they must “accept” the goalkeeper's right knee injury even though “it is not easy,” but asked to “wait” to know the extent of the injury before making decisions.
“The fans who watched it on television and those who were in the stadium saw an incredible game. The speed, the dynamics... We are very happy, but sad for Ter Stegen, because he is one of our captains,” Flick commented.
However, he insisted on the “character and great personality” of his team despite the youth of his players and said he believes that the “mix between the focus of the players and their ability to enjoy playing football” is key.
“It was a difficult match, because Villarreal never gives up, because we have analysed the team and it is very enjoyable to watch, but we played very well and we have to keep at it,” he said.
The German coach said he does not want to talk “too much” about Lamine Yamal, who “is doing very well”, but about the team, players like Lewandowski, Raphinha or the central defenders: “We played as a team in attack and defence”.
Flick said they must now “accept” Ter Stegen's injury, following those of other players such as Marc Bernal, and support him. “He is very important for us and for the German national team,” he assured.
