After splashing out over £600million during Erik ten Hag's two-and-a-half year reign, Man United want to "implement are more sustainable approach to transfers", according to the latest reports from the 'Mirror' and 'The Telegraph'. In fact, reports indicate that the Red Devils expect new manager Ruben Amorim to work with the current pool of players he has available at the club, instead of shelling out for players elsewhere.
Between Ten Hag's sacking (£15m) - alongside his coaching staff -, and Amorim's hiring mid-season (£9.25m), United have spent a whopping £25m on managers only. The club have registered £312.9m in losses before tax over the past three seasonso, putting them under pressure to comply with the league's profit and sustainability rules. But with Amorim in charge, Man United are looking to change approach while also decrease spendings.
With £180m spent in the summer transfer window to sign Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Joshua Zirkzee, Noussair Mazraoui and Manuel Ugarte, Amorim has reportedly been told not to expect fundings for January. The INEOS ownership believes that the Portuguese boss is capable of bringing out the best from the players currently in United's squad.
Rasmus Hojlund and Mason Mount have been particularly highlighted as such examples. The striker was brough in for £72m from Atalanta, whilst the Englishman arrived from Chelsea for £55m, but both have failed to shine at Old Trafford so far. Nevertheless, United that believe the pair have the potential to impress under the former Sporting boss.
Despite continued links with Sporting Lisbon striker Victor Gyokeres, Manchester United are unlikely to be busy during the January window as Amorim is set to wait until the summer for any possible transfers. With various players out of contract at the end of the season - Christian Eriksen, Victor Lindelof, Jonny Evans, Harry Maguire and Amad Diallo - Amorim will have more room to manoeuvre should he want to sign other players.
