After two seasons in England, one on loan at Tottenham and the other at Aston Villa, Clement Lenglet could return to La Liga, although not with Barcelona. According to reports in Spain, the centre-back has reached an agreement in principle with Atletico Madrid.
To alleviate the departures of Mario Hermoso, Stefan Savic and Gabriel Paulista, the Madrid club were looking for defenders and the player would have become one of the top priorities.
Atletico are waiting to sell some of their players to free up the wage bill to sign new players. Lenglet has had no hesitation in giving the green light to Atletico. He had another offer from Villarreal but decided to wait for a call from Atletico, which finally happened.
Although at first, they dismissed the option of Lenglet because of his high salary (16 million euros gross), it seems that they have thought better of it. The market is still open and Atletico could still have room for a few more reinforcements for a promising 2024/25 campaign.
