Aurelien Tchouameni will be captain of the France national team in their upcoming Nations League fixtures in October. The confirmation came from the player himself as he posted a story on Instagram captioned 'captain' to share the news with fans across the world.
The 24-year-old will momentarily takeover the armband due the absence of Kylian Mbappe. The striker has been ruled out from the squad due to a minor thigh injury with Real Madrid. France are now also without vice-captain Antoine Griezmann, who recently announced his shock retirement from international duty.
Tchouameni also admitted to that he was taken back by the news. "We were all suprised by the announcement. Personally, I never saw it coming. But Antoine is happy, and that is what matters the most to us". The Real Madrid midfielder was asked about the decision to become captain during a press conference ahead of Thursday's game. “It’s a great pride and responsibility," he said. “We had a discussion with the coach and he told me about this decision. I am very happy”.
France boss Didier Deschamps also spoke ahead of the match against Isreal. "I chose Aurelien because I think he is the right man to take on the responsibility. He will be captain tomorrow (against Israel). On Monday (against Italy) we wil see."
