It was a formality but it is now official. Wojciech Szczesny has been registered in the Barcelona squad for the Champions League. The Pole will be able to play in the next European game.
While it is true that UEFA does not allow the inclusion of any player on the A list, it is also true that there is a clause whereby a goalkeeper can be included in the squad in the event of a long-term injury... as long as there are no more than two players on the list.
This has allowed Barcelona to count on Szczesny for the rest of the season in Europe as well. The Pole could make his Champions League debut against Bayern Munich on 23 October.
For the moment, the former Juventus man was left out of the squad against Alaves. Hansi Flick had already warned that he needed some time. And the international break has been a good time for him to get back to fitness.
So Szczesny could make his official debut in the Barcelona shirt against Sevilla on 20 October. It will be up to Flick to decide whether to stick with Inaki Pena as a starter or give the Pole the alternative.
