Real Madrid eased to a 2-0 win over Las Palmas on Wednesday to overtake Barcelona and move second, but Catalan minnows Girona are the surprise La Liga leaders after after a 2-1 win at Villarreal.
Jude Bellingham, who has been outstanding in recent games and has become a key player in the squad, did not play a single minute in Wednesday's match. His coach Carlo Ancelotti spoke to reporters and explained the reasons for his absence.
Luka Modric also played no part in the victory of the Spanish giants. "I preferred to give them a rest, especially Bellingham, who told me he was tired. We just wanted to avoid problems.
"The players understand that rotations are important, I try to manage the squad. Until the break, there will be rotations because the wear and tear is very important, there are a lot of injuries in this period of the season when it's difficult for the players to perform at 100 per cent," Ancelotti claimed.
