Steven Berghuis lost his temper after Twente beat Ajaz 3-1. On top of the defeat itself, it means the side managed by John Heitinga won't play in the Champions League next season, and will have to make do with Europa League fixtures.
'Tubantia' reported that after the match, Berghuis punched a fan who was directing racist abuse at his teammate, Brian Brobbey. The punch showed the fan the consequences of his racist insults, and he got more than he bargained for.
Berghuis went over to the fence to talk to him, but the indignation got the better of him and he took the direct route. The reaction left the crowd open-mouthed and he was encouraged to get on the bus directly.
La Liga is not the only league plagued by these lamentable acts. Unfortunately, they are more prevalent than people want to admit. After Madrid striker Vinicius Jr was racially abused during a game earlier this month, the spotlight has been shone on the racism that has dug its way into football worldwide.
