Arsenal were looking to put the Premier League defeat to Newcastle behind them and arrived in Italy ready to give their all to secure a third Champions League win. Inzaghi's side were coming into the European competition clash on the back of a home win over Venezia which put them in second place in Serie A.
Inter quickly took control of the opening minutes of the game with two shots, one from Dumfries that crashed against the crossbar was the first warning Raya had of the night. On the half-hour mark Mikel Merino almost had an equaliser for Mikel Arteta's side with a header that went wide.
In the closing minutes of the first half, Arsenal had a setback when Calhanoglu's free-kick hit Merino's hand inside the box and the referee awarded a penalty. The Turkish player sent Raya the wrong way with a shot down the middle.
In the second half the Gunners manager wanted to give the team a new look and took off Merino, who committed the penalty and brought on Gabriel Jesus to create an impact in the team's attack. Arsenal tried to equalise with Martinelli and Saka sending crosses into the box but they were unable to find the net as the Italian defence cleared all the threat with Sommer denying a great shot from Havertz.
Filippo Inzaghi introduced Thuram, Barella and Mkhitaryan in the 62nd minute to give the team more consistency and freshness but it was Arsenal who were displaying their offensive potential but it was not enough to surprise Sommer or the Inter defence who held on for the equaliser until the end.
It's not all bad news for Arteta as Martin Odegaard returned from injury and will be a welcome addition for Sunday's trip to London. Arsenal need to get back on track and a win away to Enzo Maresca's Chelsea on 10 November in the Premier League would be a good start to get them back in the race for the title.
