The end of the thriller between Chelsea and Manchester United was impressive. The Red Devils, who had come from 2-0 down early on, were on course for another unbeaten run at Stamford Bridge, where they had not lost since 2017, but extra time spoiled their party at the London ground.
A superlative Cole Palmer capped his hat trick with two goals to turn Ten Hag's success into an epic stoppage-time winner for the Blues. It was the fifth comeback by a team in extra time since the introduction of VAR and, although there had been late goals before, this time it took the longest for a team to turn the game around in stoppage time.
It was not until the 100th minute that the former Manchester City man equalised when he converted Dalot's penalty on Madueke. The referee, Jarred Gillet, had added eight minutes to the game, making it 3-3 with the estimated added time already up. However, seeing that the penalty had taken too long to be awarded, the referee decided to extend the game a little longer, which Cole Palmer took advantage of to send the home fans into euphoria by scoring a fourth in the 101st minute.
Earlier in the season, Manchester United had already staged another injury-time comeback, this time with a happy ending for the Red Devils. Ten Hag's side, who were trailing 1-0 to Brentford on 7th October 2023, eventually won the game with a brace from McTominay in the 93rd and 97th minutes at Old Trafford.
The current campaign has been prolific in late result changes, with Tottenham the protagonists of the other two that have occurred. On 11th November 2023, Spurs saw Wolves cancel out Johnson's early 1-0 lead with two late goals. Pablo Sarabia equalised in the 91st minute and there was still time for Mario Lemina to seal the three points at Molineux Stadium in the 97th minute.
A few months earlier, on 16th September 2023, Tottenham had come out on top against Sheffield United, who had gone 1-0 down in the 73rd minute and lost when they looked like winners. That comeback for Postecoglou's side was very similar to Chelsea's on Thursday, with the Spurs' goals coming in the 98th (Richarlison) and 100th (Kulusevski) minutes.
The last stoppage-time reaction since VAR came into use in 2019-20 came in a Leicester-Tottenham match on 19th January 2022. Patson Daka had given the Foxes the lead and, after Harry Kane's equaliser, it was 2-1 to Brendan Rodgers' side by the 90th minute when James Maddison scored a goal a quarter of an hour from time. Bergwijn, with strikes in the 95th and 97th minutes, gave the Londoners victory on one of their few big days in English football.
