Marcelo and Cristiano Ronaldo have been good friends and best partners on the pitch. The Brazilian, on the podcast 'PodPah', spoke about one of those partnerships that was decisive in Real Madrid's future in the Champions League.
More specifically, it was the assist that the full-back gave the striker in extra time in the quarter-finals of the 2016-17 Champions League against Bayern Munich. A goal that, according to Marcelo himself, should not have been added to the scoresheet.
"It was offside. It was, but go and complain now," laughed the Brazilian. I knew it was offside. I thought: 'My God'. I looked at the linesman, saw him running and breathed," he confessed.
Marcelo admitted that he "could have shot", but that "you see Cristiano next to you..." and passed the ball to him to score the goal that sealed Real Madrid's place in the semi-finals. Marcelo came in through the middle, got past the entire defence and, instead of shooting, gave the ball to Cristiano on his right for him to tap home.
That goal, in the 109th minute, made the score 3-2 in a match that would end 4-2 in favour of Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu. A month and a half later, Real Madrid won the Champions League.
