Frenkie de Jong is one of The Netherands' main midfielders. However, he is still not that echelon of player at Barcelona, despite his manager thinking highly of him.
The Dutchman made the most of the few days prior to the World Cup, and gave an interview to 'De Telegraaf', where he spoke about his role in the side: "Because of the situation I was in, I knew I was going to play a bit less at the start of the season than before. I was used to playing regularly, I came on and played a game from time to time".
"I really wanted to show I'm better than the rest and that I deserve to be starting", he continued. De Jong also spoke about the Barca side's progress following their bad spell: "I think that the club is back on the rise, it's started to grow. When I play it's great, and with regards to my life in general it's perfect".
However, when asked about the supposed leaks of his contract, the midfielder did not hold back: "A newspaper published details about my contract. I didn't leak it and there was only one other party which had the contract. So it must have come from the club and you think: that's not necessary. Then suddenly there was uproar about whether my contract was still valid, because the old president Bartomeu couldn't close it. It annoyed me the it was the club, but I didn't make a big deal over it".
Despite not blaming Xavi for what he experienced this summer when he was about to pack his bags and go to United, he said that "Xavi is sure he left the door open for me to leave becuase he never said outright 'Frenkie's staying'. But I don't blame Xavi. I never felt that Xavi was against me and I think it was hard for him to talk about all that".
