Gremio, one of the most traditional clubs in Brazilian football but struggling to climb out of the relegation zone, announced on Monday the signing of Danish striker Martin Braithwaite, a former Barcelona player.
The striker will arrive in the next few days for medical examinations, after which he will sign a contract with the Porto Alegre outfit, according to a statement from Gremio.
Braithwaite, 33, who featured for Denmark at two World Cups in Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022 and played with Lionel Messi at Barcelona, was free on the market after playing in the last two European seasons with Espanyol, where he scored 22 goals. Prior to that, the Dane played for Spanish side Leganes, French side Bordeaux, English side Middlesbrough and Toulouse.
The striker arrives as another of the foreign reinforcements signed by Gremio, who have failed to climb out of the relegation zone in the Brazilian Championship standings to which they fell weeks ago.
Uruguayan striker Matias Arezo, Colombian midfielder Miguel Monsalve and Chilean attacker Alexander Aravena were all signed in the last week.
They are joined by Argentinians Agustin Marchesin (goalkeeper), Walter Kannemann (defence), Franco Crisaldo (midfielder) and Cristian Pavon (full-back); and Paraguayan midfielder Mathias Villadsanti and Venezuelan midfielder Yeferson Soteldo.
