Former Argentina player and current Independiente coach Carlos Tevez was admitted to hospital on Tuesday after suffering severe chest pain and underwent tests which proved satisfactory. "Our coach, Carlos Tevez, was admitted to the Sanatorio La Trinidad de San Isidro -province of Buenos Aires- with chest pains. He underwent the corresponding tests and they were satisfactory," the Avellaneda club said on their social networks.
The club also explained that, on Wednesday, 'Apache' will continue with a series of tests scheduled in advance as part of a general check-up. The incident involving the former Boca Juniors player occurred a week after the team failed to advance to the quarter-finals of the Argentine League Cup; he was one of the most criticised at the Avellaneda club, which he joined last August.
Local media speculated that the 'Albiceleste' international, with whom he won a gold medal at Athens 2004, could leave the Avellaneda club despite renewing his contract until the end of 2026 last December. Tevez arrived at Independiente on 22nd August 2023 and not only halted a run of negative results, but also saved the team from relegation and came within a whisker of reaching the League Cup play-offs.
The Copa Libertadores winner with Boca and Champions League winner with Manchester United, whose first coaching experience had been the previous season at the helm of fellow Argentinian side Rosario Central, took charge of Independiente after Ricardo Zielinski's departure due to poor results.
A positive start to the current season saw them remain in the leading places in the Copa de la Liga, the first tournament of the Professional Football League, but a result on the final day of the season prevented them from qualifying for the title-deciding phase.
