Fortaleza announced on Monday the signing of Brazilian defender David Luiz, former Chelsea, Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain player, with a contract until December 2026, with the possibility of renewal for another year.
The Brazilian was available on the market, after finishing his time at Flamengo, and arrives at the Ceará team, which he chose over other proposals from Brazilian and international clubs, among them the Greek Olympiakos.
“He had other proposals with much higher economic conditions, but he chose Fortaleza and understands that our project has more to do with his professional aspirations and life values,” said the club's general director, Marcelo Paz, in a note.
Thus, the 37-year-old defender ends his spell at Flamengo, a club where he played for the last three seasons and won a Copa Libertadores and two Brazilian Cups.
Before arriving in Brazil, Luiz spent 14 years in European football after joining Benfica, where he went on loan in 2007 and was later acquired by the Portuguese club.
He then arrived at Chelsea, where he won the Champions League in 2012. He also played for PSG and Arsenal. The Brazilian represented the 'Selecao' at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and the 2015 Copa America.
David Luiz now joins Fortaleza, which has already confirmed five other reinforcements for 2025: defender Gaston Avila, goalkeeper Brenno, left back Diogo Barbosa, midfielder Pol Fernandez and attacker Dylan Borrero.
