Thomas Tuchel has been appointed England national team manager. The German international has agreed to a 18-month deal, thus becoming the third foreign manager to lead the Three Lions after Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello. The FA's decision to go for the ex-Bayern Munich boss has been met with a fair amount of backlash, and Jamie Carragher is the latest to join in on the criticism.
“I'm not bothered either way. I must be perfectly honest, I'm not the most patriotic of people. It's not just about 'the England manager has to be this'. I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. England have got a brilliant manager but I think England should have an English manager," said the former Liverpool defender as talked to 'Sky Sports on Thursday. "My feeling is that the whole point of international football, certainly for the major nations, is that it’s your best v their best."
"When I think of England, we are so close to winning a major tournament with so much good work that has gone into producing these players at St George's Park, it just doesn't feel right to me that we have a foreign coach," he added. That said, Carragher is adament that the same rule applies for other teams at the top international lever. "It's not just about England - I don't think Italy should, I don't think Germany should, I don't think France should. Portugal have it at the moment with Roberto Martinez which I find strange. That's my take on it," he revealed.
FA CEO Mark Bullingham said on Wednesday that Thomas Tuchel represent's England best shot at a major title. However, Carragher is not of the same idea as he believes English coaches should be given an opportunity despite their club records. “How successful English coaches have been has got nothing to do with what I’m saying. How many club trophies have Lionel Scaloni and Luis de la Fuente won??” he argued.
