Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman told a news conference on Thursday that if France's Kylian Mbappe is eventually unable to play against his team because of a broken nose, there will be "another very good one" who will play because France is a very strong team.
"We have to wait and see, but France are so strong that if Mbappe doesn't play, there will be another one who will also be very good. Honestly, I haven't worried about that either, I have no influence on what might happen," he said.
Koeman looked back at the history of meetings between France and the Netherlands and noted that, from the series of past encounters, his side have always had "a lot of problems" in securing victories. The Dutchman pointed out that their next opponents "play well in a solid way" and are "particularly powerful" in transitions. "We have to be firm in our build-up play and be patient," he said.
On his possible line-up, he said he would make decisions depending on the Netherlands' game plan and recalled that his team has done "a lot of good things" and has also experienced "bad moments". For this reason, he said that his players have to take the initiative in the match.
Finally, he also had words for the criticised Xavi Simons: "We still have confidence in him. He is a great talent, he will have good and bad days. He will develop into a good player. I have one hundred per cent confidence in him", he commented.
