With 8 seasons and 302 appearances under his belt for Manchester City, Kyle Walker has shared the training and match pitches with a wide range of players during his time at the club. In fact, in his recent edition of his BBC podcast 'You'll Never Beat Kyle Walker', the Englishman has named one of his former Man City teammates as being rather unimpressive during training as opposed to during games.
When asked who he considers to be the worst trainer he has ever seen in his entire career so far, the 34-year-old defender named Sergio Aguero without any remorse.
“Pre-season turned up. We’ve got Tottenham. So my first game for City was against Tottenham. So I’m buzzing for this game, obviously. I’ve just left. Really want to prove, prove myself and my training. But he just wasn’t bothered. He wasn’t bothered one bit, but he’s the only player that I’d say was a really bad trainer, but he could turn it on on a Saturday," said the defender.
This is not the first time Aguero's been called out for his poor output in training, as former Man City players Micah Richards and Joe Hart have equally reiterated Walker's words in the past. In an interview with 'The Rest Is Football', Richards revealed that he was extremely shocked following the Argentine's first training session with the Cityzens - who's £38m transfer from brought him to Man City from Atletico Madrid. "“The first day in training I’m thinking ‘Oh my gosh, Aguero is here, he’s going to show me something special, he’s going to be the best player by far.’ I looked at him in training and was like what on God’s earth have we signed here?" he said.
That said both Walker and Richards recognise Aguero's magnitude as a striker, commending his ability to turn up when it matters. "As soon as that Saturday came, you knew that you were getting a goal, always providing some sort of magic. And some players are just like that. I think maybe, I don’t know, he was saving his energy. He was jet-lagged, I’m going to say, but he was, he was horrific. That day, I’d never seen someone train so bad," admitted the current Man City defender. Meanwhile, Richards said: "he was similar to [Carlos] Tevez where [he was] not so great in training but in the game, they flick a switch and turn into something else and was one of the most incredible strikers I’d played with".
During his ten-year spell at Manchester City, Aguero scored 260 goals in 390 appearances across all competiions, and won several trophies including five Premier League titles.
