Mason Greenwood, who is on loan at Getafe from Manchester United to rebuild his professional football life after being accused of sexual abuse, is being targeted by Spanish side Barcelona as they showed interest in the 22-year-old's services and decided to monitor him.
Atletico Madrid have joined the race for his transfer in recent days and will be keen to take him away from the Catalan giants in the next transfer window. However, the Red Devils would also be willing to bring him back to Old Trafford.
La Liga chief Javier Tebas told the Financial Times Business of Football Summit on Thursday that he would like the 22-year-old to continue playing in the Spanish top-flight next term and that he will not be judged on his past because he is "innocent".
"I am a lawyer, if someone has come out of a legal case innocent, there is nothing to say. He is innocent. He is another great player, maybe the circumstances didn’t make it easy for him to come but he is doing really well in Getafe as a player and I hope he continues to be successful and he continues to stay in Spanish football," he said.
"Reputation means you should respect the legal decisions and I am a lawyer so I cannot accept any people that concerned him in the press. You have to respect the legal decisions. If Greenwood came off as innocent and wasn’t condemned [convicted], there is no more to talk about," Tebas continued.
"We can’t be judges for everything, we can’t just say ‘you can’t play here’ because we would have empty teams. If somebody has been acquitted, you cannot do anything about it," he concluded.
