Despite poor results over the last two international breaks, the Nigerian FA is unable to sack Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro for lack of funds.

Just over a year and 13 matches after taking over as Nigeria coach, Jose Peseiro has failed to convince anyone. After a disastrous start to the qualifying campaign for the 2026 World Cup, with two draws against Lesotho (1-1) and Zimbabwe (1-1), the Federation wanted to sack him.
"If we had the money, we will be willing to relieve him of his job, we're not happy. Everybody is asking for the sack of the head coach. It's unfortunate that from a possible six points we only have two points. We're in a very precarious situation," NFF member Essien told reporters.
Despite the absence of the injured Victor Osimhen, Nigeria were favourites in both of November's defeats and could already be four points behind leaders South Africa come Tuesday. The 63-year-old coach Jose Peseiro, who has had spells with Sporting, Al-Hilal, Braga, Porto and the Venezuelan national team, has a mixed record of 6 wins, 1 draw and 6 defeats since his arrival.
He has nevertheless qualified Nigeria for the 2024 African Cup of Nations, but there is no guarantee that he will still be on the Super Eagles' bench when the competition kicks off on 13 January.
