Nottingham Forest's Brazilian centre-back Felipe Augusto, a former Atletico Madrid and Porto player, announced on Monday that he will retire from professional football at the end of this season.
"The time has come to leave the pitch and the idea is to leave at the end of this season here at Nottingham Forest in England," the 34-year-old defender said on social media.
Felipe indicated that "it is still too early to explain the reasons" that have led him to take this decision and promised to explain "later", as he now has a contract with the English club until the end of June and wants to "fulfil it".
"But out of respect for the clubs that have been looking at me for the future, and even my current club, I wanted to come here and talk about this with an open heart and honesty," he confessed.
The former Brazil international revealed that he thought "a lot" about his future with his family and finally decided to hang up his boots after all the "great moments" he had experienced during his career.
"I can only be thankful for the career I've had, playing for big clubs, four different countries, in the Brazilian national team and with many stories to tell for the rest of my life," he added.
The defender, who began his career at Bragantino and attracted the attention of European football after his spell at Corinthians, one of Brazil's most famous clubs, stressed that he will use the last months of his career "in the best way, with a lot of joy, intensity and dedication".
Felipe landed in Europe with Porto and then made the leap to Atletico Madrid, where he played from 2019 to 2023, winning the 2020-21 La Liga title. Last year he headed to Nottingham Forest, but injuries have prevented him from playing at his best.
