Three days after Gianluca Scamacca tore his cruciate ligament, Atalanta announced the signing of Mateo Retegui from Genoa for 22 million euros. After just one season at his first Serie A destination, he takes a step forward in his Italian journey, as he will play in the Champions League and open the year by facing Real Madrid in the European Super Cup.

Mateo Retegui, who was under contract until 2027 with Genoa, has signed for Atalanta in a €22 million deal. It is the 'Dea' board's response to the serious injury suffered by Gianluca Scamacca, their first-choice striker, in a friendly match against Parma. It has taken just three days for his bosses to make amends for his absence, which is estimated to last around six months and was therefore too big a setback for them not to react.
His replacement is taking advantage of his injury to take a step forward in his career in Italy, as he will be playing in the Champions League and challenging for the top spots in Serie A. His new club owners have not disclosed how many seasons he has signed for, and even the Italian press have not leaked it.
In just a few days' time, they will have the chance to prove their worth against Real Madrid in the European Super Cup. Carlo Ancelotti's side will be clear favourites, especially at a time when they will be able to count on Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo Goes, Jude Bellingham and the rest of the stars who have been on holiday and have been gradually joining their tour in the United States.
Last season, Retegui scored nine goals and provided three assists for Genoa, who had paid Tigre of La Liga Argentina 12 million euros to sign him. Meanwhile, Scamacca has 19 goals and seven assists to his name, so this is the target his counterpart is eyeing to prove that Atalanta have got it right with this deal and that, in the future, he is worthy of a direct duel for the job.
