Lazio confirmed in an official statement Maurizio Sarri's decision to step down as first-team coach. The news had already been reported in the Italian press on Tuesday night, but lacked the formal confirmation from the board, who have placed the former coach's assistant, Giovanni Martusciello, in charge of the squad while awaiting the recruitment of a long-term replacement.

After almost three years at the helm, Maurizio Sarri has decided to step down as Lazio coach. His decision came to light unofficially on Tuesday night, when the Italian press took for granted his departure from a team that, on Wednesday morning, formally announced the event. The 'Azzurri' are in 9th place in Serie A after three straight defeats.
The former Juventus man's assistant coach, Giovanni Martusciello, will take over his job ahead of this weekend's away game against Frosinone. The Romans are favourites, although, given their poor form in recent games, another disappointment should not be ruled out, which would raise the resentment of the fans awaiting a double-header against the 'Vecchia Signora' - in the Serie A and in the Coppa.
The interim replacement who will take over the reins of the dressing room only has experience of single-handedly managing Empoli, where he led them during the 2016-17 season with a record of 9 wins, 8 draws and 23 defeats. Not only did he fail to produce any interesting results, but he also suffered particularly heavy defeats, such as a 4-0 win over the now defunct Chievo and a 4-1 win over Crotone. Their greatest achievement was a 4-0 win over Pescara Calcio.
"SS Lazio announces that Maurizio Sarri has resigned as first team coach. The club thanks the coach for the goals achieved and the work he has done, wishing him the best of luck both personally and professionally. At the same time, the club announces that it has decided to entrust the technical direction to Giovanni Martusciello," reads the text published by Lazio, which did not catch the fans by surprise due to leaks in the Italian press a few hours earlier.
