Cole Palmer recently spoke about his surprise transfer from Manchester City to Chelsea in an interview with GQ, where he shared details of the unexpected move and the bittersweet moments that followed.
The 21-year-old midfielder, who joined Chelsea in the summer transfer window, revealed that the rapid nature of the transfer meant he didn’t have time to say a proper goodbye to his teammates at City.
Palmer, who had been with Manchester City since he was a young academy player, admitted that his departure was emotional, given the relationships he built at the club over the years. "I remember training on a Wednesday at City in the afternoon, and the news was 'they're trying to agree a fee'," he explained to GQ.
"Every time the ball went out I'd ask the kit man or the doctor if they've agreed the fee yet. So I didn't really get a chance to see many people and say I'm going. I just had to get my stuff," he revealed.
Palmer went on to add: "That's the mercenary reality of football at the top level: no goodbyes, except what can be said over text. I messaged the group chat and said 'Thanks and everything. I'm gone.' That was it."
The young talent’s move to Chelsea came as a surprise to many City fans, who saw him as one of their rising stars. However, Palmer felt the opportunity to join Chelsea was too important to pass up, especially with a chance to gain more playing time and further his career in London.
