PSG will appeal the payment of 55 million euros to their former player Kylian Mbappe for overdue wages, endorsed last week by the legal commission of the French League, although it assumed that the measure has little chance of succeeding.
In a statement sent Friday to' EFE', the entity chaired by Nasser Al-Khelaifi confirmed that they will lodge an appeal against the body's decision, despite “the limited effect” it expects it to have.
“PSG's position goes beyond the legally grounded. It is also a question of good faith, honesty, values and respect for the Parisian institution and their fans, who are more important than any player,” the entity detailed.
PSG recalled that they refuse to pay the current Madrid player, who claims the salaries for the months of April, May and June 2024 as well as the part of the signing bonus, because he failed to fulfill his “public and private commitments”, referring to the agreement by which Mbappe would have committed to forgo part of his remuneration if he left on a free transfer, as he did in June.
“The original contract was legally modified and fully respected by the player and PSG, until the player decided to back out and reneged on his commitments by leaving the club,” the Parisian statement added.
PSG insisted they are ready to continue the legal battle with their former star in the courts of employment. Mbappe's defense, meanwhile, argued that the club's wage breach is clear and, in addition to the French league, took the case to UEFA.
In addition to possible financial penalties, clubs that do not honour their wages are subject to sanctions such as a ban on new signings for a certain period.
