As the days go by, there are fewer and fewer candidates left to lift the Africa Cup of Nations. Eight teams have sealed their place in the quarter-finals after the round of 16 and will fight for a place in the final on 11th February at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan.
Angola's Dala bagged a brace for his national team to send their country into a Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals showdown after claiming a comfortable 3-0 against Namibia. Ademola Lookman scored both goals as Nigeria defeated old rivals Cameroon 2-0 on the same day to march on to the last eight of the competition.
Mohamed Bayo headed in a dramatic winner in the eighth minute of injury time as Guinea beat 10-man Equatorial Guinea 1-0 on Sunday to advance to the next round of the African tournament, while record seven-time champions Egypt, lacking injured talisman Mohamed Salah, were knocked out of the Africa Cup of Nations after losing a penalty shootout 8-7 against DR Congo.
Elsewhere, Cape Verde won an AFCON knockout tie for the first time in their history on Monday as a late Ryan Mendes penalty gave them a 1-0 victory over Mauritania in the last 16. Hours later, hosts Ivory Coast stunned Senegal, knocking out the reigning champions on penalties in the last 16 to keep their hopes of winning the title on home soil alive.
Finally, Lassine Sinayoko scored his third goal at the Africa Cup of Nations as Mali reached the quarter-finals for the first time since 2013 by defeating Burkina Faso 2-1 on Monday, as South Africa knocked out title favourites Morocco thanks to goals from Makgopa and Mokoena that gave them a 2-0 victory.
