Real Madrid icon Miguel Angel Gonzalez dies at 76

Real Madrid announced on Tuesday 6th February 2024 the death of Miguel Angel Gonzalez at the age of 76. He was Real Madrid's goalkeeper between 1968 and 1986 and won, among other titles, eight La Liga titles.

Miguel Angel Gonzalez, one of the goalkeepers who marked the history of Real Madrid and whom the club described as a "legend of Spanish football", died at the age of 76, a victim of ALS, which he announced he was suffering from in December 2022. "Real Madrid C. F., the club's President and its Board of Directors are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Miguel Angel Gonzalez, one of the greatest goalkeepers in our history, a Real Madrid and Spanish football legend," Real Madrid announced.
Miguel Angel defended the Real Madrid shirt for 18 seasons, between 1968 and 1986, and won eight league titles, two UEFA Cups, five Spanish Cups and one Spanish League Cup.
Winner of the Zamora Trophy in the 1975-76 season, Miguel angel, whose reflexes and elasticity earned him the nickname 'the cat', was capped 18 times by Spain. He played in two World Cups with the Spanish national team, in Argentina 1978, with Ladislao Kubala as coach, and Spain 1982, coached by Jose Emilio Santamaria.
"Miguel Angel has been connected to Real Madrid almost all his life. As well as his 18 seasons as a player, he held different positions as first team delegate, goalkeeping coach and director of the former Real Madrid Sports Complex.," reads the statement. "Real Madrid would like to extend its condolences to all Real Madrid fans. May he rest in peace," the Spanish club added.
