Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso gave an interview to 'Marca' during his team's Media Day. He did not hesitate to speak about his future, lately linked to Real Madrid, and considered that it is not the right time to talk about that subject.

Xabi Alonso is on his way to establishing himself in the dugout after his great season at Bayer Leverkusen. So much so that, for several weeks now, he has been rumoured to be Carlo Ancelotti's replacement on the Real Madrid bench in the run-up to 2024. Taking advantage of the rumours, the former Real Madrid player talked about his future in a statement to 'Marca'.
"Real Madrid? One thing at a time. Now I'm here, I'm very happy and whatever comes in the future, we'll see. Normally in football, when you think in the medium to long term you lose focus of what is closest to you and right now I only think about what we have here," he said.
In addition, Xabi Alonso did not want to set himself any objectives for next season after being asked about a possible qualification for the Champions League: "That will be seen at the end of the season".
"I don't want it to be Xabi's Bayer Leverkusen, I want it to be a team. I want the team to know how to play in all aspects, to have good control of the ball, but to be solid in defence, to have stability, good rhythm.... Now we have time to work well and to see where we feel comfortable and what is working and what isn't...", he added.
