Real Madrid were voted best men's team for the 2023-2024 season and Barcelona best women's team at the Ballon d'Or gala, where 'Los Blancos' were absent in protest that their striker Vinicius was not the winner of the night's top award.
'Los Blancos' victory in the Champions League and La Liga elevated them to the award, but no representative took to the stage at the Chatelet theatre in the French capital to collect it. The club announced it would not attend the ceremony after learning that Vinicius would not be the winner.
In addition, Carlo Ancelotti was named as the winner of the Johan Cruyff award and the Italian was also unable to collect his prize, as was Kylian Mbappe, who was named as the winner of the Gerd Muller Trophy but did not attend the gala to support the Brazilian.
The Italian coach did thank on social media for winning the award, while both Real Madrid and Kylian Mbappe did not post anything on their official accounts regarding the Ballon d'Or gala.
