Portugal followed the path of England and France as all three of the pre-tournament favourites got off to winning starts, albeit in unconvincing fashion. Ronaldo was as ever the focus of attention, but the Portugal captain endured a frustrating night.
"Of course, it was obviously important [to win]. We knew it was a situation that could cause major problems. I think we played really well throughout the game. We controlled pretty much the entire game," Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes told reporters.
"We didn't gave them great opportunities to score. They had a moment of great inspiration, where they ended up scoring a great goal but it also shows the spirit of the team, of knowing how to be in the game."
