Real Madrid player Vinicus received the Socrates award on Monday for his humanitarian work in favour of the inhabitants of a favela in his country and for his fight against racism. The striker received the award during the Ballon d'Or gala from Prince Albert of Monaco.
"I am grateful for this award, football is very important in my country, Brazil, for social welfare," said the player.
Vinicius works in a favela supporting children and said on collecting the trophy that he is "very happy" to be able to help children.
He also stated that he is willing to continue "the fight against racism" and regretted that many children have to suffer from racism in their lives.
Asked by one of the gala's presenters, former player Didier Drogba, about the racist abuse he has suffered, Vinicius Jr. insisted that "we must continue the fight" against this scourge.
The gala also paid tribute to three football legends who have passed away in the last year: Luis Suarez, Bobby Charlton and Pele, and about the latter he said: "Pele is a god for me and for everyone in Brazil. If I'm here it's because of him, who put Brazil on a different level and made everyone respect it.
