Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi said on Tuesday that "a year ago" he would not have imagined he would be playing in the Olympic Games, in which he is aiming for "the maximum", in reference to winning gold, as Spain's objective.
"I'm enjoying it to the maximum because it's what I like. I've always wanted to be here. A year ago I wouldn't have imagined being here, to be honest," said the defender in the mixed zone after the last training session prior to the debut against Uzbekistan.
"We're really looking forward to it. We've been preparing for the debut for a long time and we're excited because it could be a great tournament and we're going to approach it with a lot of desire and ambition," he said. "We always aspire to the maximum, we are the Spanish national team and we always have to do it. If we compete and play well we will have a great tournament," he added.
Pau Cubarsi hopes to emulate the success of the senior team, which won Euro 2024 in Germany against England on 14th July: "We've been watching the European Championship, which has been a source of pride for all Spaniards. We're looking forward to trying to do the double, which will be historic. We really want to show what we're worth", he declared.
The centre-back assured that Barcelona and the Spanish national team "are quite similar in the way they play" and that this "favours them". In addition, Pau Cubarsi praised the fact that he was able to be in the Olympic Village."We have been in the Olympic Village these four days. There is a good atmosphere, you can see other athletes, other working methods...", he concluded.
