Real Madrid were beaten by RB Leipzig for the first time. The German came flying out the blocks against Carlo Ancelotti's sluggish side. Being 2-0 up after 18 minutes almost ended the match, but Timo Werner later scored to make sure of that.
The German striker appeared 10 minutes from time to tap in a counter which Simakan started down the right. The former Chelsea man made it 3-1 from practically point blank range and he confirmed his good form against Real Madrid in Europe.
Werner has scored against the defending champions three seasons in a row. The run started in the semi-finals of the 2020-21 season, when the striker opened the scoring at Stamford Bridge against Madrid. Zidane was the La Liga side's coach at that time.
Last season, despite taking a 1-3 lead away from London, the German also scored in the return fixture at the Bernabeu when Chelsea went 0-3 up. Then, Rodrygo and Benzema then completed the comeback.
Five matches, three goals and an assist is his record against Real Madrid. Outside of the Bundesliga, where he has spent the majority of his career, he has only scored more goals against one other team: Southampton (5). Three of his nine Champions League goals have come against 'Los Blancos'.
