There was a lack of big-name moves during January as clubs started to feel the pinch of football governing bodies' increased focus on financial sustainability regulations. However, some smart deals were still done.

Here's a rundown of the European clubs that did the best business in an uncharacteristically quiet winter transfer window.
Aston Villa
Unai Emery's side have outperformed everyone's pre-season expectations, and their hopes of Champions League qualification will be boosted by the deadline day signing of English youngster Morgan Rogers. The talented Winger joins for a reasonable £8m fee, having bagged seven goals and nine assists for Middlesbrough this season. They spent a similar fee on highly touted Czech right-back Kosta Nedeljkovic.
Atletico Madrid
Atletico Madrid secured outward loan moves for summer signings Javi Galan and Caglar Soyuncu, who have struggled for minutes since arriving. Their best piece of business was securing the signature of Belgian teenager Arthur Vermeeren. The Royal Antwerp starlet had been attracting interest from several Premier League clubs.
Bayern Munich
Bayern's most significant move in terms of the fee was their capture of French right-back Sacha Boey from Galatasaray, costing them over £25 million. Bryan Zaragoza and Eric Dier also arrived in Bavaria on loan. Despite making multiple moves, Bayern have remained the third favourite to claim this year's Champions League with most major bookmakers.
Borussia Dortmund">Borussia Dortmund
Dortmund managed to improve their first team without paying out a permanent fee. Both Jadon Sancho and Ian Maatson arrived from the Premier League on loan and have improved the quality of the German side already. In a deadline-day deal, Dortmund moved potential problem winger Geo Reyna out on loan to Nottingham Forest.
Olympique Lyon
Lyon have had a nightmare season in Ligue 1, and their January transfer business suggests they are taking the threat of relegation seriously. The French club shipped out seven players and brought another six to shake up their underperforming squad. The arrival of highly-rated striker Gift Orban is a coup. The young Nigerian forward was linked to some of Europe's biggest sides in the summer.
Tottenham Hotspur
Spurs are one of the few clubs that got most of their January business done early. Bringing in ex-Chelsea winger Timo Werner on loan from Red Bull Leipzig and promising young Center back Radu Drăgușin from Genoa. Werner has already made an impact in his appearances against Manchester United and Brentford. They also beat Barcelona to the deadline day signing of young Swedish midfielder Lucas Bergvall.
