Arsenal took on Nottingham Forest in their opening Premier League game on Saturday. The Gunners picked up their first three points of the season but it was not all good news.
Jurrien Timber, who joined Mikel Arteta's side for 40 million euros from Ajax, had to be replaced in the 50th minute due to injury.
After several medical tests, the Dutch defender will undergo surgery because he has sustained "an injury to his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee", the English club announced on Wednesday.
"Gutted to share my injury is more serious than expected, especially after the warm welcome I've received. I wanted to repay you on the pitch, which will not be possible for the forthcoming period," wrote the 22-year-old on social media.
His recovery time will depend on his progress but the centre-back is expected to be out of action for at least six months. Takehiro Tomiyasu, who was sidelined last season due to injury, is likely to take his place in the squad.
