Long gone are the days when a trip to Stamford Bridge was a daunting visit to for any team. Chelsea, under constant development since their surprise Champions League triumph in 2021, have become an inconsistent side, unable to put together a positive run of results in the Premier League.
It seemed that Pochettino's side were on the mend, but this last week has brought them back to their sad reality, with a 4-1 defeat against Liverpool and a 4-2 home win over Wolves, who even overtook them in the table thanks to that result. The Molineux Stadium side's success was largely thanks to former Atletico Madrid striker Matheus Cunha, who confirmed his adaptation to English competition with a brilliant hat trick.
The Brazilian became the 4th player to score three goals at Stamford Bridge since the Premier League began in 1992. He was also the first to do so for a non-Big Six team, the previous players having been Nwankwo Kanu (Arsenal), Robin van Persie (Arsenal) and Sergio Aguero (Manchester City).
The Nigerian achieved his feat in a 3-2 win for the Gunners in the derby on 23rd October 1999 to become the only player to do so in the 1990s. It took more than a decade for another Arsenal player, Robin van Persie, to repeat the feat at Stamford Bridge. The Dutchman scored three of Wenger's five goals in a 3-5 win on 29th October 2011. Until Sunday, Sergio Aguero had been the last player to score an away hat-trick at Stamford Bridge, in his case on 16th April 2016 under Manuel Pellegrini in a 3-0 win for Manchester City in London.
Matheus Cunha scored three of Wolves' four goals on 4th February. The first, to cancel out Cole Palmer's opener, came after an effort across the face of goal that was deflected by a defender. The Brazilian then finished off a spectacular move by Pedro Neto down the right flank when he capitalised on the Portuguese's brilliant pass. Finally, the Brazilian forward was tackled inside the box by Malo Gusto and converted the penalty by sending the Chelsea keeper the wrong way.
