Mikel Arteta won the tactical battle against Mauricio Pochettino in a game in which Chelsea were so outclassed by Arsenal that the Gunners recorded their biggest win over the Blues in their history with a 5-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium.
This heavy defeat for the Stamford Bridge outfit has put the Argentine manager even more on the ropes, as he is failing to bring Todd Boehly's multi-million pound project to fruition.
However, Mikel Arteta was keen to defend his counterpart at a press conference after his side's emphatic victory, highlighting the good work the Argentinian is doing at Chelsea despite the poor results this season.
"All the sympathy in the world with everything that he’s been through, everything that he’s doing, he knows that. I’ve been on the other side as well and nothing. He’s doing a great job, if you look at this team and analyse six, seven games of them, they deserve to win every match they play big games, big teams and they deserve to beat all of them," he said.
The Spanish coach also praised the good work of his team as well as their efficiency in front of goal. "We have made our people very proud, it is a big derby for us and I know what it means," he told reporters.
"We started the game really well but didn’t convert all our chances - we were a bit sloppy in certain areas of the pitch. In the second half we were much more disciplined and created chances and were ruthless in front of goal."
