What might have been a regular Thursday evening for most, turned out to be an historic day for San Marino. After a 20-year drought the country can finally taste victory.
The win came in a Nations League match against Liechtenstein ended 1-0, thanks to the goal scored by 19-year-old Nicko Sensoli. The young forward was able to take advantage of a defensive error from the opposition to put the ball past goalkeeper Benjamin Büchel in the 53minute. Despite the taunting 8 minutes of added time, the goal was enough to put an end to the side's remarkable winless run of 140 matches.
This is the country's first competitive victory, and only their second-ever win. Incredibly enough, their first win also was also against Liechtenstein, in a friendly game played at home in 2004, where the scoreline was also 1-0 for the hosts.
Before yesterday evening's match, San Marino´s competitive record read 0 wins, 5 draws, and 171 losses.
