It's a huge responsibility to be the one to step up to the spot, and it can earn you a place in history. For Cristiano Ronaldo, who held the role in Madrid from 2009/10 until his departure in 2017/18, he left behind a legacy - scoring 80 goals from 94 penalties taken (85.1%).
Those were big shoes to fill in the six-yard box, but Sergio Ramos stepped up regardless, and in his time put away 30 from 35 taken (87.5%), including 25 consecutively without fail. Eventually the honour came to Madrid legend, Karim Benzema and the Frenchman netted 29 goals from 35 penalties (82.9%).
Now, with Benzema's departure, a new player must be chosen to take on the role, and it appears one in particular has stepped forward. According to 'Marca', Brazilian star, Vinicius Jr has been preparing to take over, after he was seen training specifically for penalties in Los Angeles, where Real Madrid are currently on their pre-season tour.
He was reportedly seen training with Francesco Mauri, one of Carlo Ancelott's assistant coaches, for over 10 minutes, soley on penalty taking, suggesting he is getting ready to cement himself alongside some of the biggest names in Real Madrid's history books.
